EDGEWATER
Organization
The Edgewater Police Department is organized into three Divisions with an authorized strength of sixteen officers, and four civilian employees. Three part time civilian employees also work for the department and municipal court.
Administration:
In addition to the Chief of police, the administration division has an operations commander responsible for overseeing the patrol division and investigation bureau. The municipal court clerk/police clerk I and police clerk II work in the division. A part time clerk and interns work in the division also. A community service officer, responsible for the code enforcement and animal control; reports directly to the operation commander.
Investigation Bureau:
The division is authorized a sergeant and two detectives. Part time employees and interns are assigned as needed. This unit is responsible for investigating all felonies reported within this jurisdiction. Detectives investigate, file and follow up on these cases when appropriate. In 2006 there were 131 cases assigned and 85 were cleared. Patrol Division:
Two sergeants and nine officers staff our patrol division, answering 9,866 calls for service in 2006. Officers are responsible for reports on all calls for service; follow up on misdemeanor and traffic safety enforcement. In 2007 the department received funds to staff a Gang Unit. In addition to our regular training, our patrol staff is getting trained to better identify gang activity as well as relevant questioning for gang related crimes. Also we are developing in-house software to better track gang members and their associates as well as gang related crimes. A check box on all reports and summonses track crimes with suspected gang ties. With this grant the department pays overtime for special gang enforcement officers to patrol gang “ hot spots” and interview suspected gang members, as well as patrol for gang related activities. The Edgewater Police Department is a proud member of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team. |
